Hello there, beautiful Soul!
I know, I have been super quiet. I'm still coming to terms with so many different kinds of grief, stuff in my personal life and most of all: overwhelm because of the state of the world and trying to find my place in it. The following words came to me at 2AM a couple of nights ago and I thought I would share them with you.
Disclaimer: Even though "these words came to me in the middle of the night" most of the truths in there have been taught by indigenous peoples and human rights activists for ever. I'm not claiming to be the first to come up with them.
What’s the common denominator of the crises we’re facing? I’m talking about the climate catastrophe, facism, racism, classism, sexism, transphobia, homophobia, and everything in between?
Disconnection.
You can only hate / hurt another being if you don’t fully recognise your connection to them.
Now this is an oversimplification of complex systemic issues and I’m not saying I have all the answers.
But I have some of them.
My spiritual practice makes me more political everyday.
My spiritual practice makes me more open to understanding other lived experiences different from my own.
My spiritual practice doesn’t put me in a fantasy bubble of my own creation. My spiritual practice keeps breaking me open to be able to connect more and more with reality.
My spiritual practice keeps freeing me from binary patriarchal rigidity, unleashing my anger, my grief and thus my power.
My spiritual practice hasn’t given me millions in my bank account, or endless stays in tropical islands, but it has given me authenticity, my true self.
I’m not happy.
I don’t know how I can be FULLY happy when my human, animal, plant, spirit siblings are being murdered by ignorance, greed, disconnection.
By systems upheld by people whose actions I can only explain by them being light years away from themselves and everyone else. How else would it be possible to have so much power and use it so poorly?! I don’t know.
As I said, I don’t have all the answers. But "connection" is the answer to most questions.
We don’t have anywhere left to run.
It’s time we face ourselves and each other.
We need to start talking about the big things to each other. About our hopes and dreams, but also worries and fears.
We need to normalise tears and moving through our feelings, together.
We need to start telling the truth and being honest with ourselves and with each other.
We need to take on our responsibility as family members of Earth.
We are one large organism. We depend on each other. We need to stand up for and with each other.
Allies, this is the time to step up.
If you think you can fly under the radar because you aren’t disabled, trans, femme, queer, black, indigenous or someone else of the global majority and your whiteness or money will protect you, well think again. "Business as usual" won’t save anyone. Learn about your privilege and use it.
Start where you are with what you have. Hold on tight to your families and friends and make new ones. This is going to take a while. This is going to take your commitment.
We need to learn how to hold big heavy feelings and to move through them.
We need to figure out what truly brings us joy so our actions can be sustainable.
We need to learn how to give and receive love and support.
We need to learn how to have difficult conversations. With each other and for each other.
We have to learn how to be healthy and in wholesome relationships. With ourselves, with our bodies, with Earth, with Nature, with Spirit, with each other.
This won’t be done in a week or two.
This is the work of a lifetime.
